THE SCHLAVER CHRISTMAS CHIMES DECEMBER 1989

1989 is rapidly coming to an end, so it is time to recap some of the happenings this past year.

I had cataract surgery, right eye, in March, have an implant and now have my new lens, so am seeing much better. I had to renew my driver's license before the end of this year, so that prompted the surgery early in the year. I passed my test in November so hope my '77 Olds continues to take me wherever I want to go.

Helen and two friends from Davenport came and picked me up in May, driving on to Notre Dame to attend a Medjugorje conference. We stayed at Holy Cross House on campus where David was staying at that time. It was an enjoyable weekend.

David had a detached retina in his right eye at the end of January. After four surgeries he still has no vision in that eye. We all continue to pray for a miracle, and that his left one will hold up.

Matthew came and stayed with me a few weeks this summer. He had a job with his uncle, but he finally gave it up and went home. I do not know whether he was homesick or if it was Grandma's cooking. I really missed him.

My big trip this year was to Alaska, fifteen days in July and August. We traveled by plane, train and ship, a wonderful tour. The scenery was beautiful, the food delicious and the weather not too cold, only a couple of rainy days. Our tour guide was terrific and friendly people in the group were from all over the states. I have an album full of great pictures.

Paul, Ben and Beep came here for a few days after I came back from Alaska. They first visited with Marcia and family and then with David at Notre Dame. It was great to see them.

I visited with Marcia and family a few days in October. I rode down with David and then came back with him the next week when he came for the opera. We will see eight operas this season.

I continue to knit sweaters and dish cloths for gifts, and read the books David brings me. He also gives me copies of the letters he receives from his Bengali friends, so I keep in touch with them. David continues to bring his Holy Cross and Bengali friends to visit. He really helps me keep from becoming bored or lonesome.

I will spend the last few days of my vacation and Christmas with my sister Ruth and family in Richmond, Virginia.

BEST WISHES FOR A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
