THE SCHLAVER CHRISTMAS CHIMES
1993
After a happy Thanksgiving with David and a high school and college friend and his family, I realize 1993 is rapidly coming to a close. David is still very faithful coming home to check on me. He also brings his Bengali friends when in this country. He shares his letters from Bangladesh too.
I keep in touch with Paul and the boys by telephone. I did take a week’s vacation this spring and visited them. Julian gave me part of his walking tour of Harvard Square which I enjoyed. Ben came home for the weekend so we had a good visit.
Marcia and family are still commuting between Michigan and Indiana, and now Mark is working in Lombard, Illinois so things are unsettled about where they will live. This fall Marcia, Michelle and I went to visit Wisconsin relatives, then drove on to Door County. Marcia and I took a weekend jaunt to Davenport to go river boat gambling. Marcia wanted to do a story on river boat gambling. We went on two of the boats, but because the Mississippi was so high the boats didn’t move, just stayed docked. Davenport relatives went with us so we had a great weekend. Marcia is editor of the Penny Saver/Times which has seven editions and 152,000 circulation. C. O. would have been very proud of her.
My last week of vacation was taken to help Marcia get her 700+ costumes ready for Halloween rentals or sales. What an experience! She also had a garage sale, my first one!
Matthew continues working at Notre Dame Library Archives. He has had no luck in finding a position even though he has his two degrees from Notre Dame. Clay works in Michigan at Big Buoy’s Toys in sales and as a mechanic. He chose not to enter college after graduation. Shane is a senior at St. Joseph High School in South Bend. He is anxious to enter Notre Dame University after graduation and hopes to play baseball there. Michelle is in 7th grade and although boys have entered the picture, continues to love her horses.
My brother and his wife came up one week from Champaign to take me to lunch. What a treat! They call me quite often, checking up on me I guess. Ruth, Helen and I keep the phone lines busy too.
I do not travel the highways with my 77’ Olds Cutlass, but I still ‘love my Olds! I did get down to Notre Dame this fall, Matthew came and picked me up. I visited the sisters at St. Mary’s and attended a couple of parties with David and his friends.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who during the past year has sent me prayers, good wishes, salaams, nomoskars and hugs.
BEST WISHES TO EVERYONE FOR A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY NEW YEAR!
Love and Peace,
Elizabeth C. Schlaver
