THE SCHLAVER CHRISTMAS CHIMES
1994
This was the year I retired as of January 31, 1994. My plans were to work on photo albums, clean out many years accumulation, but find that I really haven’t done much of any of that. I continue to read books, have a small garden and knit.
My first trip was a week in Mishawaka to sit with the Steffens clan while Mark and Marcia went on a cruise.
My next trip was my annual visit to Richmond Virginia to the Coplans, two and one half weeks, but not long enough to satisfy Ruth. I was in time to see the spring flowers. I enjoyed Chris’ new home way out in the woods, and Tim and Page new home in a beautiful development.
I came home and started my garden, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, but then off on another trip with Dorothy Barnes to Montana to visit Kay and Ted Witham. They took us to Glacier Park, a bison range and we really had a great time. I never realized what a beautiful state Montana is.
David and I drove to Davenport in July for Helen’s birthday so had a chance to see Mary and Sue and her family. My brother and his wife drove there from Champaign.
Paul came in October for a week’s vacation which I enjoyed. I put him to work to take my porch furniture in the basement for winter. Ben and Julian were in school so didn’t get to come.
Thanksgiving was spent this year with David out in Berkeley California, his new assignment at Holy Cross Center. Helen and I flew out together to visit her daughter and son-in-law in Santa Cruz. David came and picked me up and really gave me a tour of Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. One day we met Helen and her group at Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch. I went to two of David’s masses at the Missionaries of Charities Home for Aids. He took me to the Andre House for Homeless and met Brother Ron Whelan C.S.C., years ago at Notre Dame High School for Boys in Niles. It was great to have lunch with John Fitzgerald a classmate of David. We had dinner with Carole and Martin Kilgariff. Carole was one of my roommates on my trip to Bangladesh about ten years ago.
The latest is that my 20 year old grandson Clay informed me that he was moving to this area, planning on working with his uncle and that he was moving in with me. Well, he did! It is really different after being alone almost fifteen years.
I have been fortunate health wise, only a few aches and pains that come with getting older. My thanks to everyone who sends me their prayers, good wishes, salaams, nomoskas and hugs.
Love and Peace,
Elizabeth C. Schlaver
