SCHLAVER CHRISTMAS CHIMES — DECEMBER, 1983

The Holiday Season is once again before us, time for reminiscing over the past year and to look forward to 1984. 1983 has been a fast moving year, not too much to report, just the usual trips to relatives.

Another Coplan wedding in July, Tim and Page, was a time for family and friends to get together in Richmond, Virginia. David and I flew there. David was asked to perform the wedding ceremony. Once again David and I enjoyed the Southern hospitality of the Ralph Thomas family.

Paul, Lisa, Ben and Julian drove down from Cambridge, Massachusetts for the wedding. They have been planning on coming to Mount Prospect for Christmas. Paul is in his third year night law school and guess he needs to get away from it all. They will be coming on Amtrak.

A couple of trips to Dowagiac, Michigan to visit Marcia, Mark, Matthew, Clay, Shane and Michelle the past year was enjoyed. My last trip there I rode back to Notre Dame with David, then came home on Amtrak, which wasn't too bad. I have to transfer from the Union Station to Northwestern Station in Chicago, then to Mount Prospect.

A few weeks ago made the trip to Davenport, Iowa when my sister Helen had a gathering to introduce her new Irish son-in-law, Alan Counihan, married to Pat Ray. Had a chance to see my brother Edward and his wife, Mildred, and Gene and Hazen Perkins, my cousins. It was an enjoyable weekend.

David has introduced me to the opera. He had an extra ticket for seven operas so told me he would take me if I paid for the ticket. I was really thrilled because I had never been to an opera before. He usually comes in Tuesday evening, the opera is Wednesday night, then leaves early the next morning for Notre Dame. Think I have enjoyed having David home as much as the opera. Afraid it will be a long winter now that the opera is over.

Thanksgiving day was celebrated with a family from Bangladesh. David met Terence and Katherine Penheiro when he was in Bangladesh a couple of years ago. They now have two little girls, Jessie and Cathy. Terence is a graduate student at Notre Dame. David drove them to Mount Prospect for a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner. A few weeks before, David took me to their home for a Bengali dinner, which I did enjoy.

As I am writing this we are planning on all being together this Christmas. I have been getting out my Christmas decorations, and of course will have a tree.

Have been working every day, and hope to continue, God willing and health permitting.

Happy holidays and may the New Year be filled with good health and much happiness.

Betty
