SCHLAVER CHRISTMAS CHIMES 1996

December has arrived with a couple of measurable snow falls, so realize it is time for the Schlaver Christmas letter which was started forty-one years ago.

Early in 1996 Marcia had an opportunity through the Rotary Club of Indiana to go to Japan for a month. What an experience for her, so I offered to stay with Michelle in South Bend. While there on Passion Sunday, leaving the Basilica I fell, ending up with a trip to the emergency at St. Joe Hospital. Thank the Lord, no broken bones, but a horrid black eye, bruised face, left hand and wrist and broken glasses.

David came back in May from Bangladesh to attend his 25th anniversary of ordination. In July he began a renewal program in St. Louis. He is planning to return to Bangladesh the end of January, but most likely will not stay there to work.

My family, Helen, Sue and Mary from Davenport, Edward and Birdie from Champaign and Ruth from Richmond, Virginia came to attend David’s Jubilee.

Paul came later to Mount Prospect so had a visit with David. Ben continues with his job in Los Angeles, and Julian is a sophomore at New York University.

Marcia is now living in South Bend close to Notre Dame. This fall she started a B & B for football weekends. Matthew is attending Indiana University, and I understand will soon be getting his master’s degree, studying history. Clay continues with his job in the Northwest suburbs, lives in Arlington Heights. Shane is a junior at Notre Dame and is planning a spring semester in Rome. Michelle, a sophomore at St. Joe High School, will soon have her driver’s license.

I visited with Ruth and Ralph Coplan in October and while there again made apple sauce and came home with eight quarts frozen in plastic bags. Had to leave some because I couldn’t take the balance, so have an excuse for another trip. While I was there Paul drove down to Richmond from Cambridge, Massachusetts to be with us a few days.

I continue reading, knitting and have had a small garden and flowers, so try to keep busy. I hope my health keeps me in good shape to be able to cross that bridge into the 21st century.

My wishes to all – A BLESSED CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY NEW YEAR.
