1960
Vol. 1 No. 7 of "The Schlaver Christmas Chimes," dated December 25, 1960.
Family News: It's Christmas time and as a family we're thankful that since our last holiday message we can report to our friends: This has been a busy year and at times a hectic one with David off to college, C.O. dashing here and there on editorial trips for OA, Paul "summering" at a golf pro shop, Betty "tellering" at the bank and Marcia reaching that somewhat unpredictable girlhood a year removed from teen-age status.
Right now the exciting news is that C.O. is tossing his battered hat into the ring for village president (mayor) come next April. Marcia says that she wishes she were 21 so she could vote for Dad.
Before enrolling at the University of Notre Dame last fall, David had a chance to go to Galen Hall in Pennsylvania and to New York City. He chauffeured Dad over the toll road on this business trip which included a stop in Buffalo, N.Y. David was in the East again for a weekend as a member of the "Fifing Irish" marching band which traveled by bus to Philadelphia for the Notre Dame-Navy game. There, a wet field sidelined the band but our "music man" who would be a lawyer went on to New York City where he saw "West Side Story." A highlight of David's summer came when he worked each night at the Republican convention as a press messenger. Days were spent in varied tasks, mainly in the circulation department, at Office Appliances.
Paul is waiting for next February 7 when he'll be 16 and eligible to drive that Austin A-55 which has been somewhat idle except for mother's use while David is away at college. The Marching Dons' band is one of Paul's top interests in high school as a sophomore. He keeps on the hop Saturday nights working as copy boy in the sports department of Chicago's American.
Marcia likes TV better than helpful tasks about the house, we might relate, but there's still hope for improvement. She's still our "cheerful little earful" and at times the "blonde bombshell."
Last spring, a swing down South by C.O. to Miami, Orlando and Jacksonville, Fla. furnished Betty an opportunity to go along and see the orange groves, the Seminole Indian territory, Gatlinburg in the Smokies, etc. Betty has been combining housework with banking. (The money isn't hers, she just counts it at the Mt. Prospect State Bank where she's a teller).
We've been happy to have Grandma Cronau with us since last September. She's much in demand as a baby sitter.
And so time marches on. We're thankful for good health and good friends. To all our wish is "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
