THE SCHLAVER CHRISTMAS CHIMES
400 S. I-Oka Ave., Mount Prospect, Ill. Vol. 1, No. 14
December 25, 1966
Warm as the logs glowing in our fireplace go our greetings this holiday season--a time to remember and to share the experiences of our family year.
The residence at 400 S. I-Oka was often silent beginning in September, for the three young ones have flown the nest, leaving C. O. and Betty lonesome for David, studying for his master's in theology at Holy Cross College in Washington, D. C.; for Paul, a senior at the University of Notre Dame; and for Marcia, a freshman at St. Dominic College in St. Charles, Ill. where her interests are art, calculus and boys, not always in that order.
A reunion at Thanksgiving, however, brought life and chatter again to the house. There was discussion of future plans. Dad and Mother hoped that part of the brood would be home for the summer months, perhaps introduced to advanced study in lawn-keeping or house painting.
All in all it was quite an eventful year as C. O. and Betty approached their 25th wedding anniversary next Jan. 20. C. O. underwent an LBJ-type of operation in the spring and afterwards said he was ready to go like sixty after sixty.
The family, joined by David for a week, went to Boston during the National Newspaper Association convention. David spent the summer as an assistant editor of Ave Maria magazine of Notre Dame and also pursued a new hobby, that of photography. C. O. accompanied him to the Notre Dame camp in the north woods for a brief vacation but found that bridge was more fun than fishing during three days of rain. Paul sought daily commissions at Ward's in Randhurst while the checkout counter at Jewel Food Store was Marcia's summer post. Betty was working at the bank and transportation became complicated for the three working different hours at Randhurst. Paul is general chairman for Notre Dame's annual collegiate jazz festival and has been busy planning the three-day event March 2-4. He wants it to be No. 1 in the nation, just like the Irish football team.
And so the year went for the five of us--work, play and study. We greet 1967 with enthusiasm and extend that changeless greeting: "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
