THE SCHLAVER CHRISTMAS CHIMES

Vol. 1 No. 15 400 S. I-Oka Ave., Mt. Prospect

Christmas Past: A ride in the sleigh to the little one-room country school where there was a bag of candy and nuts for everyone on the tree cut in the nearby Schlaver woods at Sparta, Wis.... Popcorn strung on the pine instead of tinsel.... Roast goose with prune dressing at Aunt Augusta’s... "Shinny" games at the Big Creek millpond.... Skis made of barrel staves for braving the hill up by the orchard.... Yes, Dad gets nostalgic at this time of the year.

Christmas Present: Paul home from life of solitude, he says, and daily treks from his room at 35 Surrey St., Brighton, Mass., to the law library at Boston College. He's with us for a few days of home cooking while he hopefully tries to sell pool tables, bikes and skates at Montgomery Ward in Randhurst Center.... And Marcia, too, is back in the "nest," just one more year remaining as a teen-ager. She is now 19. It hardly seems possible that the "baby" has grown up. She is a sophomore at St. Dominic College, St. Charles, Ill., where she is pursuing an art and photography course and helps part-time in the public relations department.... Meanwhile, David remains at Holy Cross College in Washington, D. C., continuing his theology studies, directing the choir and acting as journalism publications counselor for the girls at the Academy of the Holy Cross, Kensington, Md.

And in Between, During 1967: A delayed 25th wedding anniversary visit for C. O. and Betty in California, providing an opportunity to see old friends in San Francisco, non-hippies, and in San Diego, while viewing the San Fernando and Santa Clara Valleys from the Copley plane.... Paul and Marcia setting forth for Boston and Expo '67, a combined find-a-room-for-Paul and vacation trip.... David, like his Dad, discovering that journalism is interesting while working for a second summer on the Ave Maria magazine and shooting pictures for it of the march on the Pentagon.... An enjoyable week at Toronto for Mother and Dad at the RTNDA convention, followed by a "long way home" trip through the Huron Indian country, the Sudbury uranium area and Northern Michigan via the eastern side of Wisconsin....
