The Schlaver Christmas Chimes

400 S. I-Oka, Mount Prospect, Ill. December 25, 1968

That "generation gap" scatters the family as those who received our letters for the past 15 years might conclude. Thus, our "at home" circle is reduced to C.O., Betty and Marcia. But, as you'll learn later, the baby of the family has plans, too. Meanwhile, David is getting closer to ordination in the Holy Cross Congregation at Notre Dame and Paul is in Cleveland, Ohio.

David and Paul shared an apartment in Boston with two of their friends this past summer. Paul was a mover, literally. He worked with Allied Van while David studied at Harvard. This fall, David returned to Moreau at Notre Dame to complete his studies in theology. He also has an assistant editor's desk at the Ave Maria magazine and for another year is blending his journalism and music interests with his studies. Taking of deaconship vows is ahead.

Paul, now 23, decided to interrupt his quest for a law degree after successfully completing one year at Boston College Law School. The problems of the urban poor are now his full-time concern since he became a VISTA Volunteer in September. His assignment took him to the near west side of Cleveland where he works with various neighborhood groups such as buying clubs, citizen action groups, welfare grievance committees and others, under general supervision of the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland. Paul is quick to refute arguments against responsibility for helping these fellow citizens.

This year brings a "sparkling" announcement from our household. Besides studying at Mundelein College and working at Jewel at Randhurst, Marcia (who reached age 20 as we write this) is busy planning her future. She is engaged to Mark Steffens, a business course junior at Loyola University and resident of nearby Glenview, Ill. This didn't come as too much of a surprise to either family for during the past three years they have been a constant twosome. They plan to be married next fall. Her parents prefer they wait until both finish college but you know who wins that argument.

Meanwhile, life goes on about as usual for C.O. and Betty. They enjoyed joint vacations, last spring at Washington, D.C. and this past fall at Atlanta, Ga., both trips occasioned by journalism conventions which fitted into C.O.'s duties as editor of The QUILL for Sigma Delta Chi. Next November they will be at the SDX convention in San Diego, they hope. Betty is president-elect of the Mount Prospect Business and Professional Women's Club. No longer involved in village government, C.O. has few outside interests except for bowling on Tuesday nights and editing the "Topics" for St. Paul's Church.

And so we come near the bottom of the page with our sincere wish for happy holidays, health and happiness of all who receive these greetings.

C.O., Betty, Paul, David, Marcia
