1977—Another year that was for Betty and C.O.:

—When we approached that golden era which means increasing serenity and welcome opportunities to keep hands and minds active and healthy. We hope not to number the years of our lives but rather the lives in our years.

—When relief from her afflictions came November 16 for Grandma Louise Cronau at age 86. She now sleeps in peace in a beautiful country cemetery at Long Grove, Iowa, where Jack and Helen have their family plot. Grandson Rev. David CSC conducted the services and delivered a eulogy which didn’t leave a dry eye for relatives in St. Ann’s church adjoining the cemetery.

—When C.O.’s activity was curtailed during the frigid month of January (a good time to be inside) as he made fast recovery from a slight heart attack. He is thankful for a second chance, the Lions Club “This is Your Life” evening and for warning to shed excess weight. Some progress has been made in poundage but golf tutor Fred Heisler and others of the Suburban Y Wednesday Night League noted that his putting needs to shape up. There will be another summer.

—When David returned to Notre Dame as an assistant dean for graduate study at the College of Business Administration. He is engrossed in the formidable task of completing the dissertation to result in a Ph.D from the University of Michigan where he spent two years of study.

—When son Paul and his lively family became better situated in Richmond, near Berkeley, Calif. There, Paul seeks a better future for his talents which are many. Here’s hoping that endeavors and determination will be fruitful for him, wife Diana, grandson Benjamin and “Beeper”, and granddaughter Lisa. We hope to see them all in ’78.

—When we had opportunity to visit grandsons Matthew (future shortstop), lively Clay and speedy crawler Shane at the spacious home of Marcia and Mark Steffens in Webster Groves, Mo. Versatile Marcia is her busy and cheerful self as homemaker while Mark pursues his duties as an assistant controller in St. Louis.

And so we come to 1978—the year that is to be. May it bring:

Another interesting year for Betty in the bank trust department and results fruitful to the Village and members for C.O. as executive of the Chamber of Commerce working for a helpful Board of Directors.

And for all our friends, relatives and colleagues—health and prosperity.

Betty + C.O. Schlaver
